Having Problems Paying Attention?

Joe Barton, medical researcher, speaks out about ADD and ADHD:

Have you ever felt emotionally bankrupt, or just so bored you didn’t have the energy to do the old routine one more time?

The truth is that your brain controls your endocrine and nervous system and sends signals out to more than 600 trillion cells continuously and you don’t even have to think about it. It all gets done at lightning speed, faster than you can blink an eye.

What most people don’t realize is that this important regulatory function carried out by your brain is controlled by your heart. That’s right . . . there is a heart/brain/body cellular relationship and it all depends on how you feel.

Have you ever passed a test with flying colors only to have forgotten all the information by the next semester? Well the reason isn’t a drug deficiency or a lack of brain power. The odds are that you didn’t “feel” the information was worth remembering – it didn’t “feel” relevant. That’s right . . . you didn’t believe the information you memorized was valuable enough, so subconsciously you didn’t choose to retain it. You didn’t know you were that smart did you?

That doesn’t mean you don’t have the capacity to learn – contraire! The fact is that school doesn’t teach how to think, they only teach the pressure of memorizing information. So how you “feel” really has a lot to do with your mental function and overall level of performance.

So how you “feel” really has a lot to do with your mental function and overall level of performance.

On the other hand, have you ever flunked a subject in school so bad you felt like a moron? Maybe it wasn’t the whole semester and maybe you didn’t flunk out, but have you ever felt you could have done much better than you did?

Of course, I believe everyone can relate to that, in principle, at one point in their lives or another. However, have you ever discovered later on that you’re actually very interested in the subject and even have an aptitude or a hidden passion for it?

The problem isn’t only mental capacity or intelligence; rather it depends much on diet, lifestyle and environment as much as quality teaching . . . so let’s NOT be so quick blame the students.

I went through these similar experiences in school myself, and way back then they didn’t pass out amphetamines and there was no such thing as ADHD or ADD.

In fact there still is no such thing as ADHD and ADD . . . The real problem was the teacher didn’t “believe” in what he or she was teaching. They didn’t have a core passion for the subject and that was ultimately projected to the students. Do you relate to what I am saying?

I am very good at math now that I found a passionate author to relate to and learn from, but in High School I couldn’t get above a B- no matter what I did. The same change has happened in every facet of my life now that I am older. If you are a parent, you know exactly what I am saying.

Children need better teachers, better diets and fewer drugs.

Kevin Trudeau, the author of “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About,” exposed the truth. He published proof that attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was a completely fabricated “syndrome.”

Further he pointed out that hormone additives contaminating meat products, like growth hormones, food dyes, BHT and other chemical additives, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and refined sugar were making kids, and many adults, “feel” like the garbage they were eating.

The bottom line is that you, along with millions of kids, are being used as chemical guinea pigs. The symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit dysfunction (ADD) . . . or whatever you want to call it . . . are symptoms being specifically manufactured so “they” can keep kids drugged, and stupefied. Symptoms, Causes, Challenges of Coping, and Treatment for ADD / ADHD

While there have always been some children who have displayed an unruly, restless and disruptive attitude and been a real challenge to control, even for the best of parents, there appears to be an ever increasing number of children in today’s modern society who are experiencing serious behavioral problems, and proving to be much more challenging, and even difficult, to raise. Since you are reading this, you likely are fully aware of this problem.

You are definitely not alone in this!

While some estimates say that ADD or ADHD affects 3 – 5% of all school-age children, other estimates say that up to 1 of every 10 children are affected by the symptoms described below. It is also interesting to note that more boys than girls are affected by this condition.

In the quest to fight against ADD / ADHD, many have sought out all-natural remedies rather than add to the problem with medications.

Symptoms of ADD and ADHD

·      Inattentiveness – As the name Attention Deficit Disorder suggests, one who has ADD lacks the ability to concentrate on one thing, being easily distracted by his surroundings. He may be trying to pay attention but unable to block out his surrounding distractions and focus on what is important. Due to having a difficult time concentrating, people with ADD are often described as daydreamers. Neurologist Dr. Bruce Roseman stated: “They sit in front of a book and for 45 minutes, nothing happens.”

·      Impulsiveness – Those who have ADD are prone to act suddenly on impulse without reflection on the consequences, thus demonstrating poor judgment. Because of this, their actions can sometimes prove to be dangerous to themselves, others or property. Commenting on this type of behavior and its consequences, Dr. Paul Wender says, “He rushes into the street, onto the ledge, up the tree. As a result he receives more than his share of cuts, bruises, abrasions, and trips to the doctor.”

·      Hyperactivity – This basically differentiates ADHD from ADD. A child with ADHD cannot sit still as they are very restless, constantly fidgeting. Commenting on this, Dr. Gordon Serfontein wrote in his book, The Hidden Handicap, “Even when they are older, careful observation will reveal some form of continuous movement involving the legs, feet, arms, hands, lips or tongue.”

These symptoms tend to be so pervasive that they affect nearly every aspect of a person’s life, thus making it very difficult to cope with – for themselves and everyone around them.

What Causes ADD / ADHD?

Although all the potential causes of ADD and ADHD are not yet fully understood, there is general agreement among researchers that the main cause is neurological.

Dr. Jan Mathisen, a pediatric neurologist, stated: “ADD is an apparent defect in certain areas of the brain. We’re still not sure of the precise neurochemical problems involved, but we do feel that there is involvement with a chemical in the brain called dopamine.” He added, “It’s probably not one single chemical, but a relationship among several chemicals.”

Similarly, Dr. Bennett Shaywitz, professor of pediatrics and neurology at Yale University Medical School, stated the likely cause as being “inherited disturbances in certain chemicals in the brain’s neurotransmitter systems.”

Dr. Stanley Turecki likewise stated: “Genetic influences, brain chemistry, and neurological development contribute strongly to who we are as children and what we become as adults.”

Learning-specialist Priscilla L. Vail stated: “Their minds are like TV sets with faulty channel selectors. One thought leads to another, with no structure or discipline.”

ADD / ADHD Is Not Just a Childhood Disorder

It is estimated that about 50% of children with ADD or ADHD retain at least some of their symptoms right into adulthood, making it more difficult for them to sit through meetings, wait in line, or just complete projects.

This can have serious consequences for an adult. Dr. Edna Copeland stated: “The hyperactive boy may turn into an adult who changes jobs frequently, gets fired a lot, fiddles all day and is restless.” This can even pose a strain on one’s marriage and family life.

Challenges of Coping with ADD or ADHD

·      Children with ADD / ADHD can create several difficulties not only for themselves but also for their parents and siblings, their teachers, as well as their peers, posing a challenge for everyone around them.

·       School can be a real nightmare for children with ADD / ADHD. The demands on concentration and remaining quiet in a classroom setting can pose a real problem for children who are chronically inattentive, easily distracted, overly impulsive and hyperactive. Due to their inability to control their behavior and evaluate the consequences of their actions, they may be labeled as the class clown or class terror. For some, normal learning just cannot be maintained.

·       Due to lacking the ability to filter out distractions and focus on what is important their education can suffer, which can potentially affect their future prospects for employment.

·      Young ones with ADD / ADHD characteristically react tempestuously, explosively, even with uncontrollable frenzy, when faced with problems. This can leave parents and teachers feeling flustered, totally rattled and ultimately spent.

·      One of the consequences of having ADD / ADHD is that it can affect the child emotionally, potentially causing low self-esteem due to the constant disapproval and criticism from possibly parents, teachers, and peers. Another attributing factor to this could be their less-than-desirable academic achievements. This could, in turn, fuel their angry outbursts.

·      Risky behavior during adolescence can escalate to delinquency. Newsweek reported on a study comparing 103 hyperactive youths with a control group of 100 children who did not have the disorder and said, “By their early 20s the kids from the hyperactive group were twice as likely to have arrest records, five times as likely to have felony convictions and nine times as likely to have served time in prison.”

·       Raising children who have special needs can be a very stressful time for parents, calling upon them to manage this in a balanced and healthy way. According to the book A Fine Line – When Discipline Becomes Child Abuse, reportedly 21% of all physical abuse cases occur when aggressive behavior is displayed by one’s children. Research concludes, therefore, that children who are ADD / ADHD are at “greater risk of physical abuse and neglect.”

·      Some children with this disorder have reportedly not only been impulsive but also very dangerous and chaotic. Even though they may have been raised and cared for by loving parents, they may give vent to a very destructive behavior by screaming at others, smashing things, starting fires, using weapons, harming themselves, others or animals.

·       Sometimes the toll of having an ADD / ADHD child can be felt the worst by parents who have become perplexed, confused or anxious about their child’s negative behavior both at home and at school. Marital discord can arise with each parent putting blame on the other for the situation.

Treatment for ADD / ADHD

Since having a child with ADD / ADHD can be so devastating and challenging and can take a serious toll on everyone around them, it is important to seek treatment as early as possible.

Some experts in the field suggest that hyperactivity can be channeled into physical exercise. The U.S. News & World Report noted: “The evidence is mounting that each person’s capacity to master new and remember old information is improved by biologic changes in the brain brought on by aerobic conditioning.” Therefore, moderate amounts of exercise, in whatever form, can be good for both the body and the mind.

One of the most controversial treatments is the use of medication. Activity-modifying drugs have had mixed results. Debate continues over their usefulness, their over-prescription, and their many harmful side effects if used over an extended time. Consultation with your doctor, along with careful research and evaluation will help you decide if medication is right for your child.

For those who have tried medication but obtained poor results, (or those who would simply prefer a natural remedy), there are alternative methods of treatment. Information on one all-natural treatment for ADD / ADHD can be obtained here.
