What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s Disease is named after a German physician, Alois Alzheimer, who is credited with first defining the disease over 100 years ago, in 1906, after performing an autopsy on a patient with severe dementia. To this date, Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for the majority of dementia cases. (Dementia is a group of diseases characterized by declines in memory loss and other mental functioning.)

So what is Alzheimer’s? It is a brain disease whereby the brain cells undergo a gradual destruction, resulting in a progressive loss of one’s cognitive abilities. One of the first signs may be personality changes due to the emotions being affected by that part of the brain. Following that, memory and thinking ability may start declining, and later on sight, touch and muscular activity may be affected.

As the disease progresses over time the victim is able to do less and less, obviously affecting their day-to-day living. In the final stages victims of Alzheimer’s are able to do very little for themselves and often become bedridden.

Addressing Alzheimer’s Disease

When this disease first becomes apparent, some don’t take any action, hoping the problem is just temporary and that it will disappear. Rather than ignoring the symptoms, they should be addressed as early as possible. The brochure Alzheimer’s: We Can’t Ignore It Anymore states that ‘Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder of the brain causing loss of memory and serious mental deterioration … It is a disease and NOT A NORMAL PART OF AGEING.’

A thorough medical examination may reveal if the disease is definitive. Some cases of dementia can result from other health issues that are treatable. Several tests may be necessary to arrive at the right determination. The book How to Care for Aging Parents concurs saying, “Alzheimer’s can be diagnosed with certainty only by studying the brain during an autopsy, but doctors can rule out other possibilities and then make a diagnosis by the process of elimination.”

Arriving at an accurate diagnosis is important because certain symptoms such as confusion, disorientation, or even incontinence may not be due to Alzheimer’s Disease but rather due to changes that have occurred in that one’s life, such as a move to a new location, bereavement over the death of a loved one, or an infection.

Since Alzheimer’s is a slowly progressive disease, any apparent sudden changes may not be due to the disease at all. The book Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Confusional States explains it this way: “A sudden deterioration usually means that an acute condition (such as a chest or urine infection) has occurred. A small group of sufferers do seem to have a more rapid downwards course… For most, however, the decline is quite slow, especially if the person is well cared for and any other medical problems are tackled early and effectively.”

Treating Alzheimer’s Disease

If it is determined with certainty that a patient does have Alzheimer’s Disease, then the decision needs to be made as to whether medication is advisable or not. Along with any benefits there may also be risks. Also keeping in mind that, as each person is different, drugs are not effective in all patients to the same degree, and in the process of experimenting with different drugs, there is the potential for side effects and even damage. Taking medication, whether it is for the disease itself or for any of its accompanying conditions such as sleeplessness, anxiety or depression, needs to be weighed very carefully.

There is something else to consider. Since most diseases are caused from a buildup or acids and toxins in the body, it would make sense to try to eliminate these for achieving better health. With that in mind, Matt Traverso, a public speaker, natural health expert and best selling author, teaches people how to dramatically improve their health naturally, without expensive and potentially dangerous prescription drugs.
