Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Frequently Asked Questions About MS

1.) Is MS an autoimmune disease?

While this cannot be stated with certainty, it is believed to be so.  It appears that the body's immune system is triggered to malfunction by a common virus and attack the central nervous system's protective myelin.  Some people are more susceptible than others to this virus.

2.) Is MS a disabling disease?

As each person is different, the disease will affect individuals to varying degrees, ranging from minimal to severe. So while MS may be disabling for some, it may not be for others.

3.) What are the symptoms of MS?

MS can result in extreme fatigue, impaired speech, double vision, loss of balance and even paralysis.

4.) Is MS a fatal disease?

The good news is that for the vast majority of people who have MS, it is not fatal, in fact, they can expect to live a normal or near normal life span.

5.) What age group is most commonly affected by MS?

It's been found that those between their mid-teens and 40 years of age appear to be the main targets of MS.

6.) Is Canada a high risk factor for MS?

With MS developing in approximately 2 - 4 people out of every 1,000 across the country, Canada is considered a high risk area.

Types of MS

Relapsing-Remitting MS - most common type; attacks followed by recovery, either partial or complete.

Secondary-Progressive MS - within 10 years of diagnosis signs of worsening develop; affects about 50% of those with Relapsing-Remitting MS.

Benign MS - not as severe; few attacks; long sessions of remission; after 15 years there are few signs of disability.

Primary-Progressive MS - steady progressive worsening; relatively rare type.

Primary-Relapsing MS - steady worsening combined with attacks; relatively rare type.

Malignant MS - within the first five years of diagnosis there is a rapid progressive disability; highly rare type.
