What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a non-contagious, very common skin disorder that affects millions of people. Although it can
occur in children, it is generally seen in adults between the ages of 30 and 50. While women are more inclined to get rosacea,
men who do get it are inclined to have more severe symptoms.
It has often been mistaken for other common skin conditions such
as acne, sunburn, or even effects of alcoholism.
Rosacea can not only cause damage to your skin but also to your self esteem. It would be obviously prudent on your part to obtain early diagnosis and treatment before the condition gets worse.
What
Are the Symptoms of Rosacea?
Rosacea is a progressive skin disorder that if not treated and triggers avoided, can progress from
mild to moderate to severe.
Rosacea usually begins as frequent facial flushing, persistent redness, small red solid bumps,
pus-filled pimples, or small blood vessels becoming visible on the skin.
Other symptoms that may develop include an eye
irritation (ocular rosacea), the face developing a burning or stinging sensation, an itching or tight feeling, a rough dry appearance,
raised red patches (plaques), a thickening of the skin (rhinophyma), facial swelling (edema), and/or symptoms of rosacea on the neck,
ears, scalp or chest.
What Are the Various Types of Rosacea?
1.) Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea. Most often this occurs first and is evident by the redness and flushing of the facial cheeks and possibly nose. Other symptoms,
as described above, may also occur.
2.) Papulopustular Rosacea. Pimples and bumps that
resemble acne, in combination with persistent redness of the face make their appearance.
3.) Phymatous Rosacea. This manifests itself most commonly on the nose, that takes on an enlarged appearance, and acquires a bumpy
surface in combination with a thickening of the skin.
4.) Ocular Rosacea. This is evident
by red irritated eyes and is very serious as it can potentially lead to vision loss if not treated.
What exactly are the causes of rosacea are not currently known. While there are many theories,
they have not been medically confirmed. What is known is that some lifestyle factors and environmental issues can aggregate
rosacea symptoms. These are referred to as rosacea triggers. Determining what these triggers are and avoiding them can
help to reduce the symptoms.
Identifying Rosacea Triggers
1.) Weather. Various weather
conditions can affect people differently. If certain weather conditions make your rosacea worse, then take steps to protect
yourself from these conditions by either staying indoors or by covering up.
2.) Certain Foods and Beverages. Keep a record of which foods and/or beverages trigger your rosacea flare-ups and try your best to avoid them in the future.
3.) Rigorous Exercise. If this triggers your rosacea flare-ups, then you should try to avoid over-heating by exercising when cooler,
spraying your face with cool water, or try shorter more frequent exercise sessions.
4.) Stress. Try to avoid emotional stress as much as possible. When feeling stressed, try relaxation exercises, deep breathing, and gently
stretching. Eat well and get enough moderate exercise as well as enough sleep.
5.) Medical Conditions. Hot flashes associated with menopause can trigger rosacea flare-ups, as can colds, flu, coughs and fevers. By treating the underlying
health condition, sometimes the rosacea flare-ups can be brought under control.
6.) Drugs. Long-term
use of topical steroids as well as some drugs used to dilate the blood vessels in the treatment of cardiovascular disease has been
reported causing rosacea symptoms to worsen. (Important: Do not discontinue any medication prior to consulting with your
health care provider/doctor.)
How to Effectively Treat Rosacea
With proper skin care, lifestyle management, and/or
medical treatment, your rosacea symptoms can be greatly reduced or even eliminated.
Skin Care: Since rosacea sufferers
often find that their skin is sensitive, it is important to choose skin care products that are gentle and non-irritating.
A regular
routine of cleansing, moisturizing and protecting can go a long way in managing your rosacea symptoms.
To cleanse, use a mild,
soap-free cleanser, rinse with lukewarm water, and gently pat dry. Do not use hot water or anything rough, and do not rub or
scrub the area.
To moisturize, use a moisturizer that is fragrance-free and one that will not clog pores.
To protect, use
a fragrance-free sunscreen with a minimum of 15 SPF, or cover up if possible.
Lifestyle Management: As discussed earlier,
be diligent in identifying and avoiding your specific rosacea triggers. If you can identify what factors trigger your rosacea
flare-ups, you can take steps to avoid them and thus reduce your rosacea symptoms.
Medical Treatment: Medical treatments
vary. Your doctor or dermatologist will make his/her recommendations based upon your specific Rosacea symptoms and severity,
and may include topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics, laser surgery, or other appropriate treatments.
