How To End Your Tiredness, Sleep Less and Feel Energized – Naturally!

Did you know that over 2.2 million Americans complain of being tired every day (quote taken from WebMD) and that 1 out of 10 people visit their doctor complaining about being tired? And for the last 10 years that number has been increasing rapidly!

As to how much of a problem this has become, it has even been referred to as the modern day plague. It’s not just a matter of feeling tired in the morning and finding it difficult to get up, but rather a feeling of being run-down all the time, not having any energy. You can likely relate to this yourself.

The sad part is that many of us accept this as the ‘norm’ and part of everyday life, or at least part of getting older. But many younger ones feel the same.

The good news is that although hard work and hard choices may be unavoidable adult burdens, tiredness doesn’t have to be. There is a solution – and it’s not necessarily getting more sleep.

Tip #1:  Did you know that you sleep in cycles, generally of one and a half hours in length? This means that your sleep cycles end after 1 ˝, 3, 4 ˝, 6, 7 ˝, and 9 hours.

If you either awaken naturally or are awoken by an alarm clock/radio at the end of one of the cycles, you will feel more alert and energetic. Have you heard of people waking up in the middle of the night and feeling fully awake, possibly not being able to get back to sleep because their mind is racing? They awoke at the end of one of their sleep cycles.

On the other hand, if you are awoken in the middle of a sleep cycle, your mind is not prepared for this and you feel tired, foggy, out-of-sorts, and not ready to get up. All you can think about is that you want more sleep!

This leads to one strong tip for feeling rested when you awake in the morning – try to time your sleep so that in the morning when it is time to get up you are at the end of one of your sleep cycles. If you do so you will start to feel a whole lot better … even if it means getting less sleep!

Less sleep? Yes, a person who awakes after 6 hours of sleep will likely feel a whole lot more awake and alert than a person who is awoken after 7 hours of sleep. The reason is that 6 hours is at the end of a sleep cycle whereas 7 hours is in the middle of a sleep cycle. Make sense? Try it, you’ll definitely see a strong improvement! You might have to experiment a little as some may have slightly shorter or slightly longer sleep cycles, but generally our sleep cycles run about 1 ˝ hours in length.

Tip #2:  Another tip for acquiring more energy and feeling more alert is, if your circumstances allow, lie down for a few minutes in the afternoon. You do not need to go to sleep, if fact it is better if you don’t. Just relax. Give your back a rest. Give your mind a rest. Try to go into a state of deep relaxation, pushing all the stress out of your mind and body with each breath out. This may take some practice, starting with 20-30 minutes possibly, then gradually shortening the time. I’ve been doing this for years and now find that even 5 minutes can make a huge difference!

Tip #3:  A third tip for feeling more alert, is try to avoid having any caffeine in the afternoon. Even though it may give you a quick pick-me-up, it could interfere with your sleep at night.

Tip #4:  Try to avoid exposure to strong light – such as computer, TV, etc – for at least an hour prior to going to bed. Strong light interferes with your mind preparing for sleep. Try reading instead. It will help to relax you and you will fall asleep faster.

Hopefully these tips outlined above will help you to some extent. I know they have certainly helped me. There are actually many things you can do to feel more energized during the day and enjoy your life more, instead of always feeling tired.
